My Review Of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie on The Danger of a Single Story

When Ngozi started writing books about life, she failed to paint a wide picture of the world’s people and worst still about her own people.

This was all because in her lifetime then, she had only read books about the West, the happenings there and lifestyle.

She had ignored or forgotten her background. The books that inspired her into telling stories were written by people who didn’t know or care to know about Africa her (background) and so they presented false stories about Africa.

This influenced Ngozi as a child to believe just one side of the story. As children, we are very impressionable and vulnerable in the face of a story.

Things changed when she discovered African books.

Many of the books were not available but great writers brought a mental shift in what she perceived as African literature. She had learned about things she recognized unlike with the former books. To be saved from a single story, you have to explore other areas out of your present concentration.

When a single story is told many people can get away with wrong impressions, interpretations and lessons.

In fact, it is better to write a story of people you have lived their lives not what you hear or think about them. A single-story shows a people as only one thing over and over again and that’s what they become.

Before you fall on somebody before you are quick to judge someone for what you heard from one of the actors, ask yourself do I have all the necessary information to pass some judgements in this matter?

We should stop judging others without getting all the information from all parties.
